A Student-Friendly History of Paul F. Asicksik Sr. School

Paul F. Asicksik Sr. School has grown and changed over the years, becoming the strong learning community you know today. Its history is shaped by the students, teachers, and leaders who helped build a school that supports learning, culture, and pride.

Early Schooling in Shaktoolik

Before the modern building existed, students in Shaktoolik learned in small local classrooms that served the community. These early classrooms were simple, but they were important — they gave students a place to learn reading, writing, math, and traditional knowledge close to home.

Building a Modern School

As education in Alaska expanded, Shaktoolik needed a larger, safer, and more permanent school building. When the community settled in its current location, a new school was built to serve all students from kindergarten through high school.

This new school provided:

• More classroom space

• A gym for sports and activities

• Areas for cultural learning

• A place for community events and celebrations

It became the center of learning and gathering for the entire village.

Honoring Paul F. Asicksik, Sr.

The school was named Paul F. Asicksik Sr. School to honor Paul F. Asicksik, Sr., a respected community member known for his leadership and dedication. Naming the school after him reminds students to carry forward values of strength, respect, and commitment.

Joining the Bering Strait School District

As part of the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), the school gained access to more resources, teachers, sports programs, and academic support. This connection helped the school grow and offer more opportunities for students.

Becoming the Wolverines

Over time, Paul F. Asicksik Sr. School developed its identity — including its mascot, the Wolverine. Students participate in sports, cultural activities, academic competitions, and community events that build pride and teamwork.

Today’s School

Today, Paul F. Asicksik Sr. School is a full K–12 school where students learn modern subjects while staying connected to culture and community. It continues to grow with new programs, technology, and opportunities for students to succeed.
