Helping Our Students Be Successful

As a follow-up to our commitment to strengthening the partnership between our school and families, each month we will highlight one of the "Things Parents Can Do to Help Their Children Be Successful in School" from our Student Handbook.

This month’s focus is: Encourage your child to do his or her best in school.

Encouragement from home makes a difference. Taking time to ask about your child’s day, celebrating their effort and progress, reminding them that mistakes are part of learning, and encouraging them to keep trying can help build confidence and a positive attitude toward school.

Our staff is dedicated to the Mission of the Bering Strait School District, supporting the whole student in a culturally grounded, safe, and welcoming learning community.

Our Vision continues to guide our work: All students are thriving and contributing, culturally, locally, and globally.

When families and schools work together to encourage our students to give their best effort, we help them develop the confidence, perseverance, and skills they need to thrive.

Quyana to our families for being our partners in your children’s education!

Special shout-out to Lynda Bekoalok, AEC member, for contributing her artwork to help us share this message with our community.

We are continuing to experience issues with calls from cell phones to the school’s landline. To ensure clear and timely communication, please avoid contacting staff through their personal cell phones or social media for school‑related matters. Please refer to the flyer for the approved ways to notify the school. You are also welcome to send a written note with your student and have them drop it off at the school office.

📣 Migrant Education Survey

Dorothy Ivanoff from Bering Strait School District is here recruiting for the Migrant Education Program!

If you have not yet completed the Migrant Education Survey, please stop by the school office. 🎁 Dorothy has Migrant Education buckets for families who complete the survey!

The survey asks about activities your family may have participated in, such as commercial fishing, subsistence fishing, berry picking, and qualifying travel or camping activities.

Completed surveys are submitted to the State of Alaska to determine eligibility. Identifying eligible students is important because it helps our school receive federal Migrant Education funding that provides valuable programs, opportunities, and resources for our students, including:

• Tutoring and additional academic support
• Paraprofessional support
• School supplies and books
• ANSEP opportunities
• CCR (College & Career Readiness) activities and resources

If you haven't completed a survey yet, please stop by the school office and visit with Dorothy. Every eligible student we identify helps bring additional resources and opportunities to our students.

Thank you for supporting our students and school!

Substitutes Wanted

NACTEC sessions being offered during the next high school training Session 5 fliers are attached. We hope your students apply to Session 5! The deadline for applications is September 22nd. Applications available in the school office.

Culinary Arts:
This training will focus on safe food handling and will be a hand on training in food preparation, baking, and presentation. This is one of our most popular offerings and students have really enjoyed this training in the past. If you have a student who likes to cook, and might want to explore a career in this area please encourage them to apply.

Introduction to Welding:
Students in this training will learn to safely measure, cut, assemble, and weld using a variety of processes in this training. Welding is a useful trade in rural Alaska and this training will teach students the basics of safety and fabrication with metal for their own interest or a later career.

Driver Education:
Our excellent AAA certified driving instructors will help students obtain their Instructional Permits and Provisional Licenses and gain safe driving instruction. This is especially valuable for your older students but any student over the age of 14 is welcome to apply. We hope to see your students apply.
